Money! Money! Money!

The famous writer William Somerset Maugham once wrote, “Money is like a sixth sense—and you can't make use of the other five without it.” We all understand that money is important, but how much do you really know about the bills and coins you use?

Paper Money—The term “paper money” comes from ancient China, when bills were really made of paper. However, American banknotes today are actually made from cotton and linen fibers. In Australia, a kind of plastic is used.

Coin Ridges—The ridges on coins are more than just decoration. In the past, dishonest people shaved off the edges of gold and silver coins. They sold the meXXXXXtal shavings and still used the coins, even though they were actually worth less. With ridges, it's easier to spot a coin that has been shaved.
